DPS offers tips for safe holiday travel

Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Nathan Brandley shared some important tips for those traveling for the holidays:

CORPUS CHRISTI (KIII NEWS) - According to AAA, 50 million drivers from across the country will travel more than 50 miles from home this Thursday -- an increase of over three-percent from last year.

Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Nathan Brandley shared some important tips for those traveling for the holidays:

  • Make sure your car is in good working order, and that the tires are aired up properly and have a good tread.
  • Make sure everyone in the car is wearing a seatbelt correctly.
  • Make sure a cell phone is out your hands while driving.

"If you have the means in your vehicle, use Bluetooth or plug it into an external cable into your car speakers and use it that way in case a call comes in," Brandley said. "Or if you have a call going out, you can voice activate that way you're not having to look down to type in the number."

Another essential tip to remember is to give yourself plenty of time to get to your destination.

If individuals do any drinking, they shouldn't drive. They should let someone else who is sober be the driver, or call a taxi or ridesharing service such as Lyft or Uber.
