Family using tragic loss to help others

Melony Campos joined the homicide survivors group after she almost fell victim to her ex-husband's violence. Campos said that moment has driven her to help the Sierra family continue Gilbert's legacy.

CORPUS CHRISTI (KIII NEWS) - 24-year-old Gilbert Sierra was volunteering his time making homicide survivor tee shirts when he later became a homicide victim himself, and was shot on Nov. 18 on the city's north side.

"Mommy mommy mommy," daughter Alora said.

"Somebody shot my honey, the whole night was a nightmare," wife Raven Sierra said.

Gilbert's killer did not take a life; they took his wife's high school sweetheart, her joy, and strength.

"I told him all the time; I don't know what would happen if you were to leave me or if anything were to happen. I'll never be able to lay down on my back and put my feet on his side while he slept and watched tv," Raven said.

Raven's mother Lupita Gonzales knows what it's like to lose a loved one to homicide but never thought she would face a tragedy like that of Gilbert.

"We never dreamed in a million years that she would feel like pain and she knows what to expect," Gonzales said. "I'm devastated, and we want answers."

Melony Campos joined the homicide survivors group after she almost fell victim to her ex-husband's violence. Campos said that moment has driven her to help the Sierra family continue Gilbert's legacy.

"Those could've been my kids getting gifts from heaven, from her," Campos said.

Gilbert and Raven met when they were 14  and had three children together. Now Raven, Lupita, and Melony are continuing Gilbert's work by making shirts for children who have lost a parent to homicide.

"The gifts from heaven will never stop no matter what. We will raise money for gifts from heaven in Gilbert's name. She wants to help these children that lost their parents. We're not gonna let the devil beat our family," Gonzales said.

The Sierra family is hosting a fundraiser on Saturday for the Homicide Survivors Group in Gilbert's honor.
