CORPUS CHRISTI (KIII NEWS) - One arrest has been made in connection with the accidental shooting death of a two-year-old boy at his home Sunday.

According to police, two-year-old Ryan Morales and his baby brother were home with their mom on the 1000 block of Vaky Street when Ryan accidentally shot himself in the face. he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Police said the toddler's father, 22-year-old Eric Morales, had left the loaded handgun on the kitchen table before he left for work Sunday.

"He arrived at the hospital, found out his two-year-old child was dead, and he agreed to come to the station and be interviewed by detectives," said Lt. Chris Hooper of the Corpus Christi Police Department.

During their interview, police said they found probable cause to charge Morales with criminally negligent homicide.

Officers said unfortunately, the accident was 100-percent preventable.

"There are tragedies involving young children, involving swiming pools, traffic, accidental death," Hooper said. "Gun tragedies are rare, but that is the case here."

Family members said even though Ryan's mother was home, she did not know the gun was left on the table because it is usually stored on top of the refrigerator, out of reach from Ryan and his younger brother. She had gone to the bathroom when the shooting happened.

Police said they are not questioning anyone else and there will likely be no more charges filed.

Because a criminally negligent homicide charge is a felony, Morales faces up to two years in jail and up to a $10,000 fine.
