CORPUS CHRISTI (KIII NEWS) - They say music is a universal language that brings people together after facing some serious setbacks. One Rockport man lost an instrument that allowed him to do just that, and then he got it back.
The family was rebuilding parts of their home after Hurricane Harvey hit in Rockport, but on Christmas morning a fire broke out causing even more devastation.
Herbert and Angel Puryear's home was gone in a flash.
The Puryear's bought their home over two years ago. Inside of it were irreplaceable belongings like Herbert's custom American Fender Stratocaster guitar. It was burnt to a crisp.
Puryear's friend, Cody Gonzales, saw pictures that were posted online and told Herbert he wanted the guitar.
"I said, 'Dude, it's trashed,'" Herbert said.
"When I saw it, it hurt a little, but I was like, 'I can do something with this. I can do something,'" Gonzales said.
Gonzales is the lead guitarist of the Rockoholics, and he was determined to bring the custom guitar back to life.
"He didn't believe it, but I kind of didn't believe it for a minute either; but it took me a whole day to work on it," Gonzales said.
Herbert said he handed over his beloved guitar to Gonzales never expecting to hear its sweet sound again.
"If he was actually to get it back together, it would be in way better hands than it would mine," Herbert said.
It turns out, most of the guitar was salvageable. All Gonzales had to do was replace the strings, the neck, and a few other pieces, and then give it a makeover.
"I'd never done it before," Gonzales said. "I'd seen it done before and had knowledge in it so I finally did it."
Herbert said he knows the guitar will be put to good use, but what he doesn't know is that in two days, the custom Strat will be his once again. Gonzales said he hopes this will give his friend some positivity from the angst caused by the fire.
But first, that guitar will be played at 9:30 p.m. Friday night at Katz 21.
