CORPUS CHRISTI (KIII NEWS) - Salem Thanksgiving Dinner took place Thursday afternoon at Sokol Hall and it initially started by former State Representative Joe Salem.

The dinner provides a warm Thanksgiving meal to hundreds of residents who may not have the means to afford their own meal.

"We love doing this, so it's nothing to us," Elaine Medina said.

Volunteers such as Medina spent their Thanksgiving helping others and said no one should miss out on the holiday because they can not afford a meal.

"We wanna be there for them, we want them to know, you have somewhere to go and your community is here for you," Medina said.

"Everything we've done in here, we've put love doing things for other people makes my day," Chary Goffigan said.

Lead cook Mr. John has been a part of the Salem Dinner for 16 years and does not plan on stopping.

"I enjoy doing this, serving, the body's getting old, 'but that's not stopping you right' well it's slowing me down," Mr. John said.

Last year Maria Renojo and her husband did not have a Thanksgiving, so they attended the Salem Dinner. This year the Renoja family paid it forward and helped volunteered.

"I can't get over it, just to be here right now it's good it's a good feeling," Maria Renojo said.
