Hurricane victims receive holiday gifts

Members of the Del Mar College Lodge 1350 met with principals of local elementary and middle schools to identify those who were in most need this year.

CORPUS CHRISTI (KIII NEWS) - Members of the Del Mar College Lodge 1350 met with principals of local elementary and middle schools to identify those who were in most need this year. Two families affected by both Hurricane Irma and Maria were selected: the Colons family from Puerto Rico and the James family from the Virgin Islands.

"Members donated out of their pocket, $50 to $100, " said masters of Del Mar College Masonic Lodge Vincent Muscarello.

The group took the families shopping last week to buy gifts, and Wednesday night the families got to celebrate Christmas a little early with Santa and Mrs. Claus.

"Got hit by Irma my family got affected cause we have a farm, that's what my mom and father depend on," Juan Colon said.

Two weeks later Colon's family got hit by Hurricane Maria.

"My wife loses her job because of the hurricane hitting, destroyed building, we lost stuff for inside house," Colon said. "My family lost everything over there."

Colon was transferred to Corpus Christi with his son, daughter, and wife.

"I didn't know if  I'm going to be able to provide them Christmas gift," Colon said.

Lienesha James who has a total of five kids lost everything back home.

"It was bad," James said. "Half of the schools destroyed, peoples houses destroyed, certain houses destroyed."

Both families appreciate every part of the groups' efforts, especially being able to celebrate Christmas.

"Means a lot," James said. "Transition for here has been hard for me all this I don't know how to explain it."

Simple messages the group wants to spread to others this holiday season.

"It's what you give that makes a difference in not only your life but other peoples lives," James said.  "The things that last are the things that left behind in this world those memories last on, that's your legacy," Colon said.
