Man pleads guilty to stabbing good samaritan at hardware store

CORPUS CHRISTI (KIII NEWS) - 19-year-old Juan Sanchez, the man accused of stabbing a good Samaritan who was reportedly trying to stop him from shoplifting, was in court Monday.

Sanchez pleaded guilty to stabbing that good Samaritan. It happened at a hardware store in July of 2017.

The good samaritan did survive.

Sanchez was sentenced to 25 years in prison.

The good Samaritan gave the following statement:

"Today brought with it the conclusion of the criminal case against my attacker. Juan Sanchez pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated robbery, a first degree felony, and was sentenced to 25 years in prison. While I believe that the sentence is right and just, I take no joy in his incarceration. A young man with his whole life ahead of him and all the possibilities that entails made a series of terrible decisions on July 2 of last year, the consequences of which mean he will spend at least the next 12 years behind bars. As difficult as this sentence will be for him, the outcome of his actions could have been much worse and almost were—but God spared two lives that day: mine own and Mr. Sanchez’s. He mercifully was spared having a murder on his conscience and before the court. It may be hard for him to see this as a mercy right now, but I sincerely hope he will realize this in due time and make good use of the grace that has been extended to him. Meanwhile, my heart goes out to the Sanchez family, who are surely grieving this evening. They, too, are victims in their own way. Please pray for them and Mr. Sanchez as you did for my family and me."
