In this installment of Military Matters, we head out to NAS-Corpus Christi and spotlight a recent event that was designed to raise money to help those in the Navy and Marines when they run into financial problems.
The Marines are using water and good old elbow grease to clean this truck. It's part of an effort, they're more than willing to undertake here at NAS-Corpus Christi. That's because the money they make will go toward helping their fellow servicemen in need. Glenda Young coordinates fund raisers like the car wash. Last year the Relief Society's fund was at a little over 25-thousand dollars. Money that can be used for many reasons. In the form of interest free loans and grants which are available to those who might have someone in the family who needs help paying for college. Marine Captain Anthony Navarrette told us that at one time he had to turn to the Relief Society after tragedy struck his family.
Capt. Anthony Navarrette told 3 News, "they gave me a loan in which I could buy my airfare and get back home to be with my family during that time and that would not have been the case since I was at a new duty station my support group was relatively small so this fund actually allowed me to be with my family."
These fund raisers will run through April 30th on base. If you would like to help out the society, you can go to NMCRS.org to donate.
