More than $350,000 cash found during routine traffic stop

KLEBERG COUNTY (KIII NEWS) - An officer with the Kleberg County Sheriff's Office found more than $350,000 in cash Monday while searching a vehicle during a routine traffic stop.

The cash was found in duct-taped bundles stashed in a hidden compartment at the bumper of a Toyota Tacoma. In total, there was $367,150 in the bundles.

The driver of that truck, identified as 20-year-old Samuel Cantu of Roma, Texas, now faces charges of money laundering and possession of a criminal instrument.

Authorities said the patrolman had received consent to search the vehicle during the routine traffic stop. During the search the officer noticed that some bolts on the rear bumper appeared to be tampered with. A further search turned up an aftermarket compartment in the bed of the truck.

A 19-year-old passenger was in the vehicle at the time and was detained during the investigation and later released.
