Neighbors recall troubled past at murder

CORPUS CHRISTI (KIII NEWS) - Corpus Christi police arrested 53-year-old Carla Welch for the murder of 45-year-old Larry Simpson on Saturday in the 7900 block of Caribou Drive.

Neighbors said the two had a volatile past. It was not the first time they have seen a major law enforcement presence at that residence.

According to police, Simpson was found dead in the bedroom Saturday, allegedly at the hands of his girlfriend, Welch. Neighbors said they had not heard from him for several days before then and they believe he may have been dead inside the home for some time.

"It's one of those things that you don't expect to happen right in front of your house," neighbor Jaime Reyna said.

Reyna lives across the street from the home where Simpson's body was found. She said Welch and Simpson's relationship was never a fairytale -- drugs and illegal activity were allegedly involved from the start.

"I think there was some sort of legal matter that prevented him from being there. Then I guess after that expired he came back," Reyna said.

Neighbors said they stopped hearing from Simpson in the days leading up to Thanksgiving, but police said they were not alerted to the home until a third party called them Saturday saying that they were contacted by Welch herself.

"The person who was ultimately arrested did not call the police. She called somebody else," CCPD Lt. Chris Hooper said. "That person called us."

It was not the first time the street had been lined with law enforcement. In October of 2015, Welch called police saying that ther friend had stolen her gun and was threatening to shoot the police. That initiated a five-hour long SWAT standoff.

Neighbors said police were there often, unfortunately.

Now, police are investigating to see how long Simpson was dead inside of the bedroom as Welch sits behind bars.

Family members said Simpson was an avid biker and will be missed.
