Phone scammer posing as Nueces County Sheriff's Department

CORPUS CHRISTI (KIII NEWS) - The Nueces County Sheriff's Office is warning residents about a phone scam they have received numerous reports about.

According to the Sheriff's Office, someone has been calling people requesting money for failing to appear for a federal jury summons, threatening that they will be arrested on a federal warrant if they do not pay. The caller identifies themselves as an employee of the Nueces County Sheriff's Department.

Authorities say the scammer also asks to verify personal information and requests payments in gift cards. They then give them a fine amount and the address to the Nueces County Jail Annex, 745 NPID, to meet there to pay or face arrest.

The Nueces County Sheriff's Office does not request money over the phone nor in person, and they do not arrest for violations of federal offenses.
