Port Aransas still expecting large Spring Break crowds

PORT ARANSAS (KIII NEWS) - Port Aransas is far from recovered from Hurricane Harvey, but they think they'll be ready for Spring Break, and that's less than a month.

Spring Break kicks off the weekend of March 10 and continues through March 18.

The City expects to have the beach ready to go by Spring Break, but for businesses and places that offer lodging, things may be a little harder.

"I'd say maybe in the 30- or 40-percent range, but you know, ones that are targeting Spring Break, so hopefully in the next month and a half we'll see some more open," City Manager David Parsons said.

No matter where you look you can still see piles of storm debris and vacant lots where homes and businesses once stood, but Parsons is optimistic.

"I think that the people who want to be here, they're going to come and stay whether it's on the Island or whether it's 30 minutes down the Island road, or an hour on the other side of Corpus," Parsons said. "We think they're coming."

Port Aransas Police Chief Scott Burroughs said they are preparing for the numbers they have had in the past.

"The Chamber's estimated that we've had as many as a 100,000 people on any given day, and usually they're busier the weekend," Burroughs said. "The second weekend is a little busier than the beginning of the week, and as the week progresses it gets busier and busier."

Burroughs said if past rain and cold weather didn't slow down the party crowd, the hurricane won't either.

"The people we deal with are generally the hardcore partiers, and they're coming regardless of the conditions," Burroughs said.

Local business leaders believe they can meet most of the needs of Spring Breakers, and the City has been marketing the town across Texas. Police said they are ready to handle it like any other year.
