Port of Corpus Christi to begin ship channel improvements

CORPUS CHRISTI (KIII NEWS) - The Port of Corpus Christi this week approved an agreement with the Army Corps of Engineers to begin widening and deepening the ship channel through Corpus Christi Bay and into the inner port.

For now the agreement means the Port will begin the process of sediment sampling and testing. That work is expected to take at least 10 months and must be completed before a contract can be awarded for the main job.

The project is being done in concert with the new Harbor Bridge. The goal is to allow bigger ships to come and go from Port facilities. The plans call for the channel to be deepened from the current 45 feet to 50 feet.
