Preparing for this weekend's Rockport-Fulton Tour of Homes

Kam Wagart of the History Center for Aransas County is excited for the event.

CORPUS CHRISTI (KIII NEWS) - If you love history and old homes, you may want to check out an event in the Rockport area this weekend -- the Rockport-Fulton Tour of Historic Homes.

Kam Wagart of the History Center for Aransas County is excited for the event.

All of the homes on the tour have to be at least 50 years old. The Shiver's Barnard home in the 700 block of Magnolia was built in the 1930s, and Wagart said Pinky Shivers lived there in the 1960s. She was the sheriff there at the time -- the third female ever to hold that title in the state.

"I heard she was quite the character," Wagart said. "She used to say when asked, 'Do you pack?' she said, 'I don't, but my boys do.'"

Despite Hurricane Harvey, most of the historic homes in the area had little to no damage.

"The houses are open for everybody to go inside," said Pam Stranahan, the tour's publicity chairwoman. "They're private homes. Most of them have never been opened before."

The Tour of Homes is the biggest fundraiser of the year for the History Center for Aransas County. Wagart and Stranahan are longtime members and said the tour will also include a number of people dressed in period costumes talking about the homes and the time period it was built in.

It's a history lesson that some 400 people took advantage of last year.

If you would like to buy a ticket, you can do that online or drop by the Chamber of Commerce office.
