CORPUS CHRISTI (KIII NEWS) - The Texas Department of Transportation began a $50 million ramp reversal project Wednesday to improve a 15-mile section of Highway 358.
"You know some people may get upset about it which I understand but yet also to they have to understand progress is coming too and they cant just let it go by," said resident James Walton.
TxDOT will close eastbound main lanes of the highway near staples street, and the left two eastbound lanes of the highway from Airline to Everhart from 9 p.m. till 6 a.m. There will be a brief pause into the weekend, and the construction will resume again on Sunday
"As long as they are done by six o'clock in the morning like they say down here again it shouldn't be so bad," said resident Fred Warner.
TxDOT is working to reverse ramps to reduce traffic breakups from intersections onto the main lanes. Drivers said as the south side of the city grew the location of exit ramps need to change.
"The way the off and on ramps work it may have worked like that at the time but not anymore," Walton said.
"They're too close to the stop lights, and it creates congestion during rush hour," Warner said.
The current entrance ramps onto state Highway 358 will be converted into exit ramps. It will allow drivers who are going on and off the highway to be able to merge into traffic safely.
"Traffic patterns change all of the time. people will adjust," Warner said.
"I think it would be a lot better if they pulled them back a little bit cause guys when they come off they have a better chance to break their car and keep it under control," Walton said.
But luckily construction will pause before most head to work in the morning.
"Yes there is some work that needs to be done," Warner said. "Will this fix it, we'll see."
TxDOT wants to remind commuters that traffic fines do double in constructions zones so if you plan on heading in the area slow down and no distracted driving.
