CORPUS CHRISTI (KIII NEWS) - Coastal Bend elementary schools are wrapping up their spelling bees, and 3News caught up with a couple of champs whose talent seems to run in the family.
"It was kind of easy learning to spell them, but going up there was kind of nerve-wracking," said Taliya Porter, Kostoryz Elementary spelling bee champion.
It is never easy to be a champion, and Porter said becoming a spelling bee champion took a lot of work and perseverance.
"I like to go through the words and like to look at them in the computer to get right pronunciation, then I write the definition on cards and study them over and over again," Porter said. "I didn't win in the class spelling bee in 4th grade, so I wanted to win it this year, and I did."
Porter is not the only one in her family to win. Her older sister Rayvel won the spelling bee at her school in the same week.
"I struggled a little bit, but I got better as I did it and I won this year," Rayvel said. "Some of the words we had I thought were fake because they were very hard. We didn't even know how to spell them."
The girls learned with help from their mom, dad, teachers, and librarians.
"It makes me feel very happy to know that she also got first place and we are doing this together, and we can help each other along the way," Taliya said.
"I'm happy that my sister and I won and good job to all the spellers out there who participated," Rayvel said.
