Someone to Know: TAMUCC's Shelley Martinez-Lopez

CORPUS CHRISTI (KIII NEWS) - Giving back to the community and supporting the success and education of students is what one employee at the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi is doing to lead the university through service.

"She's radiant. She is a hard worker and a team player and a patient advocate," said Zelba Chacon, TAMUCC Health Center Interim Director. "She is never hesitant about going the extra mile."

She's talking about Assistant Director Shelley Martinez-Lopez, who was born and raised in South Texas and, after Hurricane Harvey, saw the opportunity to engage faculty, staff, and students in the community during Giving Tuesday.

"They give so much to us," Martinez-Lopez said. "They help our students in so many different ways, help out the university in so many different ways, so we felt it was really important to give back."

Implemented four years ago on campus with just 50 volunteers, the number of volunteers has since tripled in size.

"It's fulfilling. It feels rewarding," Martinez-Lopez said.

This year the group dedicated their time to the Coastal Bend Food Bank and organized donations and created care packages for individuals who need it most.

"You just see stacks and stacks of boxes, and you just see how strong our community is," Martinez-Lopez said.  "How giving they are."

Martinez-Lopez believes the volunteering experience not only makes students more well rounded, but also is a way to show that the university is there for individuals.
