Southside apartment residents see spike in latest water bill

Complaints about the latest water bills sent out by the City of Corpus Christi prompted 3News to see what the problem might be for some apartment dwellers.

CORPUS CHRISTI (KIII NEWS) - Complaints about the latest water bills sent out by the City of Corpus Christi prompted 3News to see what the problem might be for some apartment dwellers.

Some Southside residents are reporting bills that are much higher than normal.

"Due to the transition, these apartment complexes are going to be seeing higher days of service, which is going to be the 45 days for December, which is going to be the general billing due date," said Margaret Morin, utility business office manager.

In December, a software upgrade prompted the City to warn utility customers to expect a monetary change in their billing cycle.

One viewer showed 3News their water bill reflecting the longer cycle.

"But the next billing cycle will only have 22 days, around 22 days of service, because of getting back into the regular normal billing practices," Morin said.

The other problem for apartment dwellers is that the City only bills the property owners a sum of the amount of all the residents. It is up to the management of the property to bill each resident directly, but some residents have problems explaining that to landlords.

"If a resident at a complex has a concern I would highly encourage them to contact the manager and then, in turn, the manager can call us," Morin said.

Another reason for a spike in utility bills in the last couple of months has been the extreme cold weather that has led to an unexpected increase in natural gas usage.

Billing should return to normal after February.
