The Columbus ship replica restoration project

CORPUS CHRISTI (KIII NEWS) - Columbus Day celebrates the day that Christopher Columbus arrived in the Americas back in 1492, but did you know that Corpus Christi is home to a replica of one of the ships used by the explorer?

Kiii News Reporter Bill Churchwell went Live from the Corpus Christi Marina with a look at a restoration effort underway to make much needed repairs to the replica ship.

You can find La Niña docked at the Lawrence Street T-head. It is the only Columbus replica ship left in the city after the Pinta and Santa Maria were dismantled two years ago.

For years, the Columbus Sailing Association has been trying to restore La Niña and they have made good progress, but they are still in need of financial support to replace decking and volunteers to help as well. On this Columbus Day, 3News stepped on board for a tour, and to find out why it's so important to restore it.

The ultimate goal is to open the ship as a floating classroom for students.
