Tips to stay safe on holiday road trips

CORPUS CHRISTI (KIII NEWS) - Thousands of drivers are hitting the road this weekend to travel for the holidays, and the Department of Public Safety wants drivers to be as prepared and safe as possible.

DPS said heavy traffic is just one of the things to take into account when going on your road trip. Agencies are urging drivers to do a thorough check on their car making sure all meters are normal and tires are properly inflated.

"We just want everyone to get to their destination safely and get home," DPS Sgt. Nathan Brandley said. "Enjoy being with family."

Brandley said preparation is key, as is taking frequent breaks every two to three hours.

"Allow yourself extra time when you do travel," Brandley said.

Travel websites recommend taking into account weather and subsequent road conditions along the drive and in your destination city.

"The biggest thing with the weather right now, it can be unpredictable at times," Brandley said. "We've had lots of rain, some heavy to dense fog."

As always, Brandley said to stick to the speed limit and watch out for any vehicles pulled over on the side of the road.

"Slow down at least 20 miles under the speed limit. Move over if the conditions allow you to do so, so there's not any extra crashes going on on the side of the road," Brandley said.

Many travel websites also recommend getting an early start to avoid traffic. You can head over to www.drivetx.org to see highway and freeway conditions like traffic or construction, and of course, you can see our local traffic conditions here.
