CORPUS CHRISTI (KIII NEWS) - The second-to-last stop in First Lady Melania Trump and Second Lady Karen Pence's visit to the Coastal Bend Wednesday was a visit to the Coastal Bend Food Bank.

"She got her hands dirty with us," volunteer Lane Hornbeck said. "It wasn't just a photo op. She was helping."

Volunteers at the Coastal Bend Food Bank said they were humbled when Mrs. Trump and Mrs. Pence did more than just show up.

"She was just there to help, and she was doing her part just like we were, so I could really tell she was really invested in what she was doing and how she was helping," Zarin Hendrix said.

During a tour of the Coastal Bend Food Bank, Executive Director Bea Hanson explained how many families are impacted by their nonprofit, even after sustaining roof damage from Hurricane Harvey.

Two weeks after Harvey, the Food Bank donated over one million pounds of food.

"Everybody's working in the kitchen, so when they walked in, it was an example of what we are having to go through in order to rebuild and get back to business," Hanson said. "They said they would be back, and they were back, and that says a lot to us here, and you know they've got our back."

Hanson expressed how important it is for the government and nonprofits to work together to make the most significant impact.
