CORPUS CHRISTI (KIII NEWS) - A Nueces County Grand Jury indicted two former corrections officers in connection with an assault that left a Nueces County Jail inmate badly injured.
The two are accused of beating the man with a pipe.
28-year-old Anthony Munoz and 22-year-old Raul Rene Flores are charged with aggravated assault by a public servant, a first-degree felony.
According to an affidavit, the inmate told authorities that on Oct. 23 a nurse called for Munoz after she saw the inmate performing a sex act. Munoz then called Flores for assistance and both officers entered the inmate's cell.
The inmate then said that Munoz told him to lay down and then began hitting him in the ribs and arm with a pipe while Flores kept watch.
The inmate was taken to a nurse by an officer on the next shift.
In that same affidavit, both corrections officers said they went into the cell to do a check and questioned the inmate about the incident. They said the inmate apologized and they left without incident.
However, a Grand Jury said there was enough evidence to indict both officers.
"We don't turn a blind eye to it. We investigate," Nueces County Sheriff Jim Kaelin said. "It's still, it's an accusation, alright, and they'll have their day in court."
Kaelin said after the accusations the two were placed on suspension without pay but resigned after they were arrested Nov. 3.
