Man Arrested After Assaulting Girlfriend, Child During an Argument

A 23-year old man was arrested Sunday evening after an argument with his girlfriend allegedly led to violence at their apartment in the 1600 block of Daly Drive.

According to police, it was around 9:15 p.m. when officers were called by the female victim. She told police that her an her boyfriend, 23-year old Mel Pena, were having an argument about him going to the beach when he tried to kick her out of the apartment. She refused, and that's when things got physical.

Police said the victim told them that Pena grabbed the female victim by the throat and started choking her. The victim's four-year old son was standing nearby and began crying, so Pena grabbed the boy by the throat as well and threw him against the wall. Pena then began punching the female in her face until his father, who lives in the front house, came to see what was going on. That's when the female managed to escape and call the police.

Both the female and her child were transported to the hospital for treatment. Pena, who was still in the apartment when police arrived, was arrested and charged with assault and injury to a child, both third-degree felonies.
