(CNN)- An outer space mystery is solved.
Last month, NASA scientists became perplexed when the mars exploration rover snapped a photo of a rock that looked like a jelly doughnut.
Researchers didn't know where it came from until now.
Turns out "Pinnacle Island" is a piece of a larger rock the rover broke and moved with its wheel in early July.
Images from the rover show the original rock that the machine's wheel must have hit.
The answer is not as exciting as if the rock had crawled into view or dropped by an alien passing by, but that's science!
