Mistakes, Homers Doom Hooks in Loss to Missions

Rymer Liriano homered twice and a two-run sun-aided infield single was the difference in San Antonio's 6-4 win over Corpus Christi Sunday at Whataburger Field before 5,181. The Missions (13-16), who evened the series at a game apiece, have won five of seven. The Hooks are 15-15.

Casey McElroy rudely welcomed Kyle Smith to the Texas League by drilling the day's first pitch into the right-field bullpen. Smith, acquired by Houston in a trade with Kansas City last summer, posted a 4-0 mark at High-A Lancaster of the California League before promotion to Double-A.

San Antonio added a pair in the second. Jason Hagerty and Adam Buschini opened with consecutive singles and advanced a base on Yeison Asencio's swinging bunt. They crossed when Lee Orr's towering two-out infield fly was lost in the sun by shortstop Jio Mier.

Liriano's fourth homer ran the score to 4-0 during the third and a one-out single through a drawn-in infield from Kyle Gaedele plated Buschini (lead-off double) the next inning.

Liriano took Smith (0-1) deep again in the fifth, his full-count solo drive striking the lower cotton press roof just left of the scoreboard. Smith recorded five innings, nine hits and six strikeouts over an 80-pitch performance (56 strikes).

The Hooks then mounted a four-run surge against Devin Jones (4-1) in his last frame. Preston Tucker's league-leading 11th double scored Matt Duffy, who'd drawn a lead-off walk. After Mier reached on a Jones throwing error, Tyler Heineman crushed a two-run triple to right-center. M.P. Cokinos followed with an RBI ground out.

Jones allowed four hits, two earned runs and walked one. Frank Garces, Dennis O'Grady and Johnny Barbato teamed to keep Corpus Christi off the board the rest of the way, Barbato earning save No. 7.

Heineman extended his hitting streak to eight games.

It's $1 Hot Dogs and Soda Monday night at 7:10 when left-hander Tommy Shirley (2-2) toes the rubber for Corpus Christi. His opposition: righty John Hussey (1-0).
