Mix Up Lands Local Businessman in Jail

A routine stop by a Duval County deputy sent noted Corpus Christi businessman Mauricio Celis to jail overnight; but it was all a mix up.

Celis remained in custody for a few hours after the deputy discovered there was an open warrant for his arrest out of Zapata County for allegedly missing a court date.

According to his attorney, Tony Canales, that is where the mix up occurred. They were never notified of a hearing, and that's what kicked out the warrant. The Zapata County judge was notified and the warrant was dismissed.

The former law firm operator was previously convicted of impersonating a lawyer, but has been granted a review by the state's highest criminal appeals court. He was convicted in February of 2009 of 14 counts of falsely holding himself out as a lawyer.
