Mother Arrested for Public Intoxication, Child Abandonment

Corpus Christi police arrested a 37-year old woman overnight for allegedly leaving her 10-year old daughter at home without supervision and then coming home drunk and starting a physical disturbance.

It was around 2:20 a.m. when police were dispatched to and apartment complex in the 11600 block of Leopard Street. They had received a call from the apartment manager, who told them that the 10-year old girl had come to her door saying that her mother threw a fish tank at her.

After investigating, officers determined that 37-year old Stephanie Johnston had been drinking at her place of employment and had left her daughter alone since about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday before returning home after 2 a.m. Police said Johnston was intoxicated when they made contact with her, and that she had returned home and begun calling her daughter names before hitting her and throwing the fish tank at her.

The 10-year old girl had no signs of injuries, aside from a cut on her finger that she sustained while picking up broken glass from the tank.

Johnston was arrested and charged with public intoxication, child abandonment and child endangerment. Her daughter was left in the custody of Child Protective Services.
