HAVANA (AP) - In what could be a sign of a more active role
after months in relative isolation because of illness, Fidel Castro
has used a newspaper article to criticize U-S biofuel plans.

The op-ed piece was published today in the Communist Party daily
Granma.

In it, Cuba's 80-year-old leader says President Bush's plans to
grow crops to produce ethanol for fuel could deplete world food
supplies.

Because the article is in a style typically used by Castro when
discussing U-S international policies, there was no reason to doubt
its authenticity.

There have been other indications recently of a more active role
by Castro, including a possible return to the presidency.
