HONIARA, Solomon Islands (AP) - One resident of the Solomon Islands says it sounded like "an underground explosion."

That's how she described an undersea earthquake that created tsunami waves that wiped away entire villages and sent a wall of water through the streets.

The magnitude-eight quake is the strongest to hit the Solomon Islands since 1971. Today's quake that created the tsunami has been followed by more than two dozen aftershocks.

Officials say at least 13 people have died, but they expect that total to rise.

The National Earthquake Information Center at the U-S Geological Survey in Colorado says it would have been much worse if the area that was hit had been heavily populated.
