The Corpus Christi Police Department responded to more than 2,000 violent crimes for 2012 including homicides, aggravated assaults and rapes.
Officials with the police department say they need more officers patrolling the streets.
28 percent of violent crimes involved guns, 25 percent involved knives, and the total number of homicides last year were 16.
Commander Santiago Escalante is helping the police chief step up patrols in hot spot areas to reduce those numbers this year.
"We can show at the beg of year to know violent crime is down and we enact to keep that trend up. If you choose to be involved in violent crimes, rest assured we're going be right there," Escalante said.
Nationally, violent crime in Corpus Christi is slightly above the average, according to FBI data.
