Oyster Harvesting Closures

A warning tonight from the Texas Department of State Health Services which has closed local bays to the harvesting of oysters, clams, and mussels. The bays affected include those along the Texas coast from Matagorda Bay to Corpus Christi Bay.

The closure comes as a precaution after elevated levels of Dinophysis, a toxic algae was found. That algae can cause shellfish poisoning in people who eat it.

So far, there have not been any cases of someone getting sick, but the symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, and cramping. Cooking does not destroy the toxin.

This toxin does *not affect other seafood such as shrimp crab or finfish.
