Parents Accused of Injuring Their Children in Court Wednesday

They were living inside a sport utility vehicle near Bob Hall Pier last year -- a man, woman and four children -- and on Wednesday, the parents of those children went on trial, accused of injuring their children.

It was a trial that took an unusual turn as prosecutors decided to drop opening statements, which also forced the defense to forego their own opening statements as well.

Heather and Ryan Sanders had been charged with three counts of injury to a child. It was back in April of 2013 when police say Heather gave birth to a baby on the beach. The baby's father, Ryan Sanders, helped deliver it.

Authorities say it was four days before Heather Sanders showed up to Driscoll Children's Hospital to seek medical attention for the newborn baby. A nurse examined the infant, which was said to be malnourished.

The other children were later examined and also found to be malnourished.

During Wednesday trial, jurors were shown the 911 call that Ryan Sanders allegedly made on April 22, 2013, when the couple's infant was born.

"I just delivered our baby and I may need some medical advice, like right now," Ryan said in the recording.

Ryan Sanders was visibly emotional in the courtroom Wednesday, crying as the 911 call was played. The 911 dispatcher repeatedly tried to get their location, but Sanders was unable to say where he was.

The trial will continue on Thursday.
