Parents Arrested, 3 Children Injured in Suspected DWI Crash

Police say alcohol was involved in a single-vehicle rollover on the Crosstown Expressway near the Morgan Avenue overpass that sent three children to the hospital and two adults to jail.

The accident happened at around 4 a.m. in the 1200 block of Crosstown. Crash investigators found that the driver of the vehicle, 31-year old Kimberly Gonzalez, got into argument with her male passenger, 30-year old Daniel Rivera. Rivera allegedly grabbed and jerked the steering wheel during their argument, causing Gonzalez to lose control of the vehicle, crashing and rolling down the embankment from the freeway to the access road and wrapping around a light pole.

Gonzalez' children -- a seven-year old male, a six-year old female and a 10-month old female -- were all in the backseat at the time of the accident. Police say the two girls were in child safety seats, but the boy was not wearing a seat belt. All three were transported to Driscoll Children's Hospital with serious bodily injuries.

Corpus Christi Fire Department EMS crews said that the boy suffered massive head trauma and is listed in critical condition. The six-year old girl is also listed in critical condition and the 10-month old girl is listed in serious condition.

Police determined that Gonzalez was intoxicated at the time of the accident. She was arrested and charged with three counts of intoxicated assault, a third-degree felony. Rivera was also arrested and charged with three counts of injury to a child, a third-degree felony, and three counts of endangering a child, a state jail felony.

Gonzalez and Rivera were both transported to Christus Spohn Memorial Hospital, where police waited for them to be medically cleared so they could arrested and taken to the City Detention Center.

The accident resulted in the closure of the Crosstown Expressway from Baldwin Boulevard to Agnes Street until around 6:30 a.m. as police investigated the crash scene.
