Police Arrest Suspect in String of Island Burglaries

A 16-year old burglary suspect was taken to jail after leading police on a foot chase through an Island neighborhood Monday.

The suspect first fought with police, and was even Tasered by them, but still continued to run. Eventually, police dogs sniffed him out as he was hiding in a vacant apartment he had broken into.

Officer Mike Rogers was continuing an investigation into a number of home burglaries on the Island, where weapons and TV's had been stolen. He had no idea he would be in a fight with a teen burglary suspect. He said he suffered many cuts and bruises during the fight.

Rogers said he was a few blocks over when a resident said he had noticed a jeep driving around that matched the description of the suspects who were burglarizing homes on the Island.

When the officer went to look for the jeep, he found it near a home. A teenager and his girlfriend were walking out from the back of the home, and Rogers went up and spoke with them.

"He was real pleasant. He said, 'How are you doing, sir? We're just down here on vacation,'" Rogers said. "He fit the description that we were looking for."

Rogers checked the teen for weapons, and found a crowbar in his pocket. As soon as he took it, the fight started.

"He threw an elbow, tried to hit me," Rogers said. "He tried to get away. We went down fighting."

Eventually, Rogers said he Tased the suspect, but both barbs didn't hit him, so he was able to run off. It wasn't long after that when police dogs showed up on Seamount Cay and sniffed out the burglar. He was hiding in a vacant apartment.

Police said the young man already had warrants out for his arrest; one for burglary, and the other for evading.

Police are still looking for the girlfriend of the suspect, who came out with the teen and spoke to the officer. She took off in a jeep and left the scene.

Investigators believe the string of Island burglaries is now over.
