Local law enforcement agencies and fire departments are getting ready to do battle, all in the hopes of saving lives.
It's a fierce competition, but police and firefighters say it is mostly friendly -- the 2013 Guns and Hoses Blood Drive, which pits police officers against firefighters to see who can collect the most blood donations.
In years past, firefighters have come out on top; but police officers from the Corpus Christi Police Department say they are going to try a new tactic to win this year's competition.
"We'll try to get all the cadets in the Academy," Assistant Chief of Police Mark Schauer said. "See if we can do that."
Coastal Bend Blood Center officials said the need for blood goes up in the summer months just as donations tend to drop.
