CORPUS CHRISTI (KIII NEWS) - The 55-year-old woman who was killed just after midnight Sunday in a hit and run accident on Weber Road near Holly has been identified by the Nueces County Medical Examiner's Office as Tracy Martinez.

The Medical Examiner's Office said Martinez died from blunt force trauma to the trunk of her body.

According to the Corpus Christi Police Department, Martinez and a man were walking across Weber Road when a vehicle struck Martinez and fled the scene. Martinez was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Police said the couple was not using a crosswalk at the time of the accident.

"Many times, the actual driver of the vehicle is not at fault," CCPD Captain Donald Moore said. "A lot of time, it's the pedestrian's fault.  That would have been the case here based on what we've seen so far. Now the driver is going to be facing charges."

Police said the accident marked the eighth hit and run fatality in Corpus Christi this year.
