Pool Safety Tips to Keep in Mind for Labor Day Weekend

As Labor Day weekend arrives, the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services wants to remind parents and caregivers to keep a close eye on children around pools or any body of water.

"So far this year, we've had 64 children die in water-related fatalities," said John Lennan of Family and Protective Services. "We want to remind parents and caregivers to keep that extra eye on that child to prevent a tragedy from occurring."

Among the safety tips to keep in mind, never leave children alone around water. That includes pools, beaches, lakes and ponds.

If you have a pool, make sure you have a gate or fence that completely surrounds it and makes it hard for younger children to gain access.

You should store water toys away from the water when not in use so that they do not attract small children.
