Power Line Struck by Lightning Disrupts Traffic on SPID

Morning traffic on SPID came to a standstill after a power line came crashed down on the freeway at around 5:30 a.m. Tuesday near Airline and SPID.

American Electric Power Texas said lightning struck the top of the power pole, causing the line to fall. 13 police units and Department of Public Safety troopers were called in to reroute traffic from the area.

AEP Texas crews were able to fix the line after about five hours, and the freeway was reopened at 10:30 a.m.

The thunderstorms that moved into the Coastal Bend Tuesday morning caused several outages due to the heavy rain and winds. At one point, AEP reported that about 2,000 customers were without power throughout the day, but as of 5 p.m., all areas that were without power have been fully restored.
