It was an attempt to make a positive difference for a handful of people who might otherwise not be able to have a Thanksgiving meal; a tradition that started in 1943.
69 years later, the Joe Salem Thanksgiving Dinner serves hundreds, all thanks to a dedicated group of volunteers and donors.
On Wednesday night, those folks were at the Boys and Girls Club on Greenwood, getting things ready for the big Thanksgiving feast.
One of the people in charge was Shandele Smith, who joined 3News Live from the Boys and Girls Club to tell all about the Thanksgiving event.
The 69th annual Joe Salem Dinner will be held from noon-2 p.m. Thanksgiving Day at the Boys and Girls Club, located at 3902 Greenwood Drive. The event is free, and is first come, first served.
