Pope Benedict's American Tour

Richard Longoria

WASHINGTON (AP) - Pope Benedict XVI arrives this afternoon for a six-day visit to Washington and New York that will be filled with high-profile events.

He'll visit the White House, address Catholic educators, meet with other faith leaders, speak at the U.N., lead a youth rally, visit Ground Zero and hold two stadium Masses before leaving Sunday night.

Those who have met Pope Benedict say the nation should expect a man who knows and admires much about the U.S., but also sees a culture in need of moral guidance.

With more than 64 million members, the Roman Catholic church is America's largest. However, a recent survey by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life found that many U.S.-born Catholics are leaving the church, and that the church is growing mainly because of Hispanic immigration.
