It was a big night on Saturday night at the Omni Hotel for the new national regent of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas.

A large crowd showed up for a reception and dinner for Libby Ramirez to honor her recent appointment as leader of the Catholic women's organization. A native of Victoria native, Libby Ramirez has been a member of the organization for about 25 years.

She told Kiii News that she is excited about taking on this new and challenging role. She's the first Hispanic to hold the position.

"Overwhelming, overwhelming, I had a long journey it began back in 1983 when I joined the Catholic Daughters and its been a long wonderful journey and we've gotten to this point now."

The Catholic Daughters of the Americas is a sister organization of the Knights of Columbus with about 85,000 members across the country. They help out various charitable organizations such as Habitat for Humanity.
