Rep. Blake Farenthold Talks Sequestration on Padre Island

Worries about the impact of sequestration on the civilian workforce at the Corpus Christi Army Depot was a key topic Wednesday for Congressman Blake Farenthold.

Farenthold spoke to a Padre Island business group, saying that the across the board budget cuts in Washington could impact the number of jobs at the depot, but he said he is confident the overall impact would not be significant.

"As the result of some of the bills we passed last week in Congress, I think we're going to give them the flexibility to reprogram monies such that we can eliminate or certainly minimize layoffs or furloughs," Farenthold said.

Farenthold said that the other major concern he has heard about the sequester has to do with a possible closing of the air traffic control tower overnight at the airport. He said that even if the tower is closed at night, most of the military, commercial and civilian traffic would not be noticeably impacted.
