San Diego Residents Unhappy About Misuse of Tax Dollars

More details have come to light regarding three Duval County Appraisal District employees who were arrested for using more than $300,000 of taxpayer money to give themselves bonuses.

Local residents are not happy about the way their tax dollars were spent.

According to the Duval County Sheriff's Office, Chief Appraiser Rene Garza was authorizing the bonuses to the two other employees and himself, and he was also using a credit card that was supposed to be for appraisal district business only.

"As far as the credit card, he would use it for his own personal benefits, in going out to eat, and staying in lodging in certain areas, and paying for possible medication or anything that he needed," said Captain David Canales of the Duval County Sheriff's Office.

The Sheriff's Office said that because Garza was in control of the money, he would authorize bonus checks to be written to himself and two other employees, office manager Roel Charo and administrative assistant Analeigha Selina Carrillo. Now, all three are charged with a felony -- abuse of official capacity.

Local residents said the misused money should have been spent on fixing the roads.

"I'm a very Catholic woman, and I pray that, you know, something has to be done," San Diego resident Tina Hinojosa said. "All that money has to be back, because look at the streets and all that here in San Diego. That's why we never have nothing."

The Sheriff's Office and the Texas Rangers launched an investigation when an appraisal district board member noticed there were overdrawn checks being returned from the bank showing insufficient funds.

On Tuesday, 3News went to the appraisal district for comment, but the folks there had nothing to say to the media.

Local residents said they work hard, pay taxes and try their best just to make it, and when they see that their tax dollars are being spent this way, it's very upsetting.
