Seven Illegal Immigrants Detained After Bailout on I-37, Hart Road

Seven illegal immigrants were detained by the U.S. Border Patrol Tuesday morning after bailing out of a vehicle near I-37 and Hart Road.

The incident began around 7:30 a.m. when a Robstown police officer initiated a traffic stop on a sport utility vehicle that was seen speeding in a construction zone. Police said the driver of the SUV refused to stop and, without reaching dangerous speeds, led police on a pursuit from Robstown into the Corpus Christi city limits. At that, officers with the Corpus Christi Police Department began to assist Robstown police.

The driver of the SUV tried to lose police officers, turning from I-37 onto Hart Road and driving a short distance before ditching the vehicle near a fence line on the side of the road. Police said about 15 people jumped out of the vehicle and fled into a nearby wooded area.

Officers managed to catch up with seven of the suspects who fled from the vehicle and determined that they were illegal immigrants. The U.S. Border Patrol was called in and took them into custody.

Meanwhile, the SUV was determined to have been stolen from the Houston area and was impounded. The Corpus Christi Police Department and Border Patrol agents continued to monitor the area in search of the remaining suspects.
