Sinton Beats Top-Ranked Calallen in Season Opener

SINTON (Kiii Sports) - Don't tell the Sinton Pirates that Monday night's 3-1 win over top-ranked Calallen was an upset. That's because the Pirates have Austin plans of their own in 2013.

Sinton, ranked #3 in Class 3A, got dominant solid performances from both Haime Perez and Homer Sepeda in beating the #1 team in Class 4A to open the high school season. The Pirates broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the 4th when Jonathan Acosta unloaded a 2-run homerun to left over the scoreboard.

Calallen got on the board in the top of the 6th when transfer Chase Whetsel lined a two-out, RBI double off the wall to right. Whetsel was the tying run, but was picked off at third base to end the inning.

Like Calallen, Sinton has three state titles, but hasn't been to the state tournament since 2007.
