Someone to Know: Eight-Year Old Amethyst Hicks

Amethyst Hicks is a third-grader at Bishop Primary School. She turns nine years old on Feb. 28, but what she is doing for her birthday makes her Someone to Know.

She's not your typical eight-year old. Most kids her age simply want to have fun on their birthday, but for her upcoming birthday, Amethyst wants to help bring joy to the sick children at Driscoll Children's Hospital.

"I wanted to do this because I didn't want them to feel lonely, and I wanted them to have stuff to do, and I donated my hair and I thought this would be another good thing to do," Amethyst said.

Her mother said she cries whenever she thinks about her young daughter being so selfless at such a young age.

"You know, they want toys and they want to play and do fun stuff, and she's giving up, you know, a birthday party and gifts and everything to help out some other kids," Amethyst's mother Quala Hicks said. "And it's not very often that somebody her age does something like that."

Instead of throwing a birthday party for herself this year, Amethyst will be asking her friends and family to bring and make coloring book packets to the children at Driscoll. She said she first learned about helping the sick two years ago from her then first-grade teacher, Melinda Hernandez.

"My mom was diagnosed with cancer and she had, she went through chemo. She did not lose her hair, but that was a big thing for my mom," Hernandez said. "So she had this long, beautiful blond hair, so that was a discussion we had because she had been back and forth. I remember about cutting her hair, so we talked about it then."

After Hernandez' suggestion, Amethyst gave her hair to Locks of Love. She was seven years old, and now she continues to do for others.

"I feel like I'm helping them out by doing something good," Amethyst said. "They're more important than a birthday for yourself."

Amethyst is also looking to raise money to be able to donate a check to Driscoll Children's Hospital. If you would like to make a donation, click here, or check out Amethyst's Facebook page.
