FRISCO, Texas - After guiding Texas-Arlington to an undefeated 16-0 mark in league play, Head Coach Donna Capps was named Coach of the Year for the second time today, joining her selection in 2002, as the Southland Conference announced its All-Conference teams and honors. Stephen F. Austin's Charity Egenti was voted Southland Conference Player of the Year, after leading the Ladyjacks to a second-place finish in the West Division. Freshman of the Year went to Lamar's Brittney Williams, as she becomes the first Lady Cardinal to win the honor, while Texas State's Brooke DeGrate was selected the Newcomer of the Year, becoming the second Bobcat to win the honor in three years, joining Tamara Thompson in 2005. In a new league award that began this year, A&M-Corpus Christi's Kirbria Lewis was voted Defensive Player of the Year.
Texas-Arlington placed a league-best three players on All-SLC teams, while UTSA, A&M-Corpus Christi, Lamar and Stephen F. Austin each placed two.
Egenti, a first-team All-SLC selection, finished tied for second in the league in scoring at 16.8 points per game, while leading the league with 9.5 rebounds per game. A two-time SLC Player of the Week selection this season, she becomes the ninth Ladyjack to earn Player of the Year honors and the first since Stephanie Whitmore was tabbed in 2000.
Joining Egenti on the first-team is UTA's Terra Wallace, the 2005-06 SLC Player of the Year and a repeat first-team selection. A three-time SLC Player of the Week selection this season, she finished the year with a 16.3 points per game scoring average and registered the league's high point game of the season, with a career-high 36 points against A&M-Corpus Christi.
Also on the first team is Central Arkansas's Caronica Randle, who led the league in scoring at 19.4 points per game and with 15 20-point games. Vivian Ewalefo earns her second-consecutive first-team selection, as she posted a 16.1 points per game average, ranking No. 5. A&M-Corpus Christi's Lewis, the league's Defensive Player of the Year, rounds out the first-team. She led the league in steals at 3.07 per game and 89 total on the year. She also finished second in assists (144) and ninth in scoring (13.8).
Highlighting the second team was Northwestern State's Chassidy Jones, who led the league with three 30-point games on the season and finished the year with a 19.8 points per game scoring average. Joining Jones on the second-team are two repeat second-team selections, Texas State's Joyce Ekworomadu, who finished No. 11 in scoring at 13.3 points per game and Southeastern Louisiana's Brenita Williams, who finished No. 10 in the league in scoring at 13.5 points per game.
Rounding out the second team Nicholls State's Jamie Octave, a third-team All-SLC selection last year and UTSA's Monica Gibbs, the league's Freshman of the Year last season. Octave finished tied for second in the league in scoring at 16.8 points per game, while Gibbs led the league with 12 double-doubles on the season and was a three-time SLC Player of the Week selection.
On the third team was Lamar's Williams, the SLC Freshman of the Year. Williams posted one of the league's five 30-point games on the season, scoring 35 against Nicholls State for the second-highest single-game point total on the year. She also posted 10 double-doubles on the year, one of three players in double-digits. Joining her is teammate LaToya Carson, who was a first-team selection last year. Carson finished No. 8 in scoring at 14.0 points per game this season.
Rounding out the third-team is UTA's Maryann Abanobi and Ashley Bobb, Stephen F. Austin's Nikki Carr and A&M-Corpus Christi's Nicole Duncan. Abanobi finished tied for No. 16 in scoring at 10.7 points per game, while Bobb finished tied for second with 8.7 rebounds per game. Carr was No. 19 in scoring at 10.6 points per game No. 2 in assists and , while Duncan led the league in three-point field goals made at 2.31 per game.i
