Staples Street Construction Negatively Impacts Beamer's

The Staples Street construction project has been causing big headaches for one particular business. That is because workers are 90 days behind schedule.

Kiii News Reporter Michael Gibson went Live on Staples Street at Beamer's Restaurant, where the owners have let their feelings be known on Facebook.

The president of the company said he was told the paving and utility work going on in front of his business would be finished by Aug. 1. It is still not finished, and may be completed by the end of the month. That means that a 60-day project has stretched to 150 days.

So on Facebook Tuesday, Beamer's posted a message to its customers, pointing out how long it has taken to complete the construction project. The restaurant owners also said they feared for their employees' jobs, and asked for the support of those who regularly eat here.

"It's been tough. It's been a long haul," said Andy Purvis, president of Beamer's. "We've had to be very, very conscious of spending. Every penny counts. We're trying to protect our employee base. They enjoy their jobs, and have a need for jobs just like I do."

The City engineer said the work going on there was delayed because of underground utilities that were discovered as workers were digging. All private company cables and pipes were supposed to be removed, but that apparently did not happen. So those utility companies had to be called to remove them, and that took time to get accomplished.

Plus, there was actually enough rainfall to help delay the work as well.

In the meantime, the restaurant has had to continue to try and stay open in the middle of the mess. They have continued to offer special deals, like free dinner for kids under 12, and $4.99 chicken fried steak plates, but it still hasn't driven the traffic to the restaurant.

Now, the Beamer's owner says he wishes there could be a way for business owners to buy insurance to protect themselves when City road projects are underway, and causing them to lose so much business.

During this construction delay, Beamer's has lost 40-percent of its business.
