Storm Water Department Trains to Prepare for Storm Surge

The Corpus Christi Storm Water Department received some hands-on training Thursday morning by conducting a mock drill and setting up storm surge gates.

It was just a drill, but an import one. The aluminum protection levee gates stand nine-feet tall and can protect the downtown area from a storm surge of up to 12 feet.

City supervisors said that, once there is word that a big storm would hit the city, it won't take long to setup the levee gates.

"Within four hours they all should be up," said Ernesto Chavez of the Storm Water Department.

Along with setting up the levee, Storm Water Department employees will make sure all of the ditches and storm drains are unclogged to make sure water leaves the city.
