Surprise Ceremony for IWA Coaches Returning from Boston Marathon

One of our local runners returned home on Wednesday after running in the Boston Marathon, and he received quite the surprise when he got to his school.

Incarnate Word Academy middle school students gave Coach Donny Patterson, his wife Vanessa, and Assistant Coach Ruben Garcia a standing ovation at a special surprise assembly Wednesday. The three of them were near the finish line at the Boston Marathon when the bombs went off.

All three escaped without injury, and the students at IWA couldn't have been happier. Students chanted Coach Patterson's name for most of the welcome-back ceremony.

Patterson actually ran the marathon. He had already crossed the finish line before the explosions, but he was only a block away with his wife and Garcia when the chaos broke out.

"I was actually talking to a police officer a block away when the explosion happened, and it shook the ground," Patterson said. "And it was just a moment, I mean, time froze, and there's uncertainty. And the thing is, what do you do? And I heard the second one and you see people running at you, and we're all running away. And the policemen and paramedics, where do you think they're going? They were all running towards them. It was remarkable to see that kind of humanity. People doing what they're supposed to do."

The coaches are ready to get back to their normal routine, and they said that the bombing won't keep them from returning to the Boston Marathon in the future.
